Air suspension in BMW

In most BMW models the air suspension is fitted to the rear axle only and is used for self-levelling, so the car keeps the same height with a load or trailer. This applies to the 5 Series Touring, 5 Series GT, X5 and X6, among others. Some larger models, such as the 7 Series, can have air suspension on both axles.

Common faults

The rear air springs age and crack, so the rear of the car sags after standing. A leak makes the compressor run more often, and over time the compressor or relay can fail. The valve block can also start to leak. Replace the air springs in pairs and check the compressor at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Does my BMW have air suspension?

Look at the rear suspension: if there are rubber air springs instead of coil springs, the car has rear air suspension. The car’s equipment list also shows whether self-levelling is fitted.

Where is the compressor located?

It varies between models. The compressor can be in the boot, by the spare wheel well or underneath the car.

Can I switch to coil springs?

Yes, for several models, including the X5 and X6, there are coil conversion kits. The car then loses its self-levelling function.
