E-CLASS

Air suspension in the E-Class – three generations

The E-Class W211 (2002–2009) is available with AIRMATIC on both axles, while the S211 Estate often has rear-only air suspension. The same applies to the W212/S212 (2009–2016). In the W213/S213 (2016–2023) the system is called Air Body Control, and the C238/A238 Coupé and Cabriolet belong to the same generation. Choose the generation first, then the right subcategory: rear only, AIRMATIC, 4MATIC or AMG.

Commonly replaced parts

On the W211 with AIRMATIC, front and rear air struts are common replacement parts, as is the compressor. On estate models it is usually the rear air springs that leak. When replacing an air spring it is wise to check the compressor and relay, since a long-term leak wears them out.

Frequently asked questions

Does my E-Class have AIRMATIC or only rear self-levelling?

If the car has a button to raise and lower it and air suspension at the front too, it has AIRMATIC. If it has coil springs at the front and air springs at the rear, it has rear self-levelling, which is common on estates.

Is there a conversion kit for the E-Class Estate?

Yes, for several generations there are coil conversion kits that replace the rear air springs with coil springs. See the relevant subcategory.

Do the same parts fit the saloon and the estate?

Not always. Rear parts often differ between saloon and estate, so check the product description and the OE number.
