Air suspension in the BMW 5 Series F11 and F07 GT

The BMW 5 Series F11 Touring and 5 Series Gran Turismo F07 have rear-axle air suspension that keeps the car level regardless of load. The system consists of two rear air springs, a compressor and a valve block that distributes the air. At the front the cars have conventional coil springs.

Symptoms and common repairs

The most common fault is a leaking rear air spring, so the rear sags after the car has stood overnight. If the leak has gone on for a long time, the compressor may be worn, and the valve block can leak as well. Replace the air springs in pairs and check that the compressor fills the system in normal time afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Does the same air spring fit the F11 and F07?

Several rear air springs fit both models, but always check the product description and OE number before ordering.

Why does only the rear sag?

Because the air suspension is only at the rear. The front has coil springs, so the leak is in the rear air springs, lines or valve block.

Does the compressor need replacing with the air springs?

Not always. If the compressor sounds abnormal, runs for a very long time or fills the system slowly after the air spring replacement, it should be replaced, ideally together with the relay.
