What the compressor does

The compressor supplies the air suspension with compressed air. It starts when the car needs to be raised or when pressure drops, and on many systems it also fills a pressure reservoir. The air passes through an air dryer before entering the system so that moisture does not reach the air springs and valves.

Why do compressors fail?

The most common cause is that the compressor has to work too hard because of a leak somewhere in the system, so it overheats and wears out. A relay that sticks can also make the compressor run continuously. Always fix the leak, and ideally replace the relay together with the compressor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if the compressor has failed?

Typical signs are that the car rises slowly or not at all, the compressor is noisier than usual or runs for a very long time, or the fuse blows.

Should the relay be replaced at the same time?

Yes, that is recommended. A worn relay can make the compressor run continuously and damage a new compressor too.

Where do I find the OE number?

The number is on a label or stamped into the compressor housing. Search for it in the search field to find the right compressor.
