Air suspension in Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes uses two types of air suspension. AIRMATIC is air suspension on both axles and is found in the S-Class, E-Class, CLS, ML/GLE and GL/GLS, among others. Many estate models, such as the E-Class Estate, instead have rear-only air suspension to keep the car level when loaded. Parts differ between the systems, so it is important to choose the right subcategory.

Common faults

Leaking air struts and air springs are the most common fault, especially on older cars. A leak makes the compressor work harder and it can eventually fail, often together with its relay. The valve block can also start to leak. Typical symptoms are a car that sags after standing, a suspension warning in the instrument cluster, or a car that rises slowly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Mercedes has AIRMATIC?

Cars with AIRMATIC usually have a button to raise and lower the car, and AIRMATIC is listed in the equipment list. If the car only has rear air springs and no height button, it most likely has rear self-levelling.

What does ADS mean?

ADS (Adaptive Damping System) means the shock absorbers are electronically controlled. Air struts come in versions with and without ADS, so make sure you choose the right one.

Do parts differ between 4MATIC and rear-wheel drive?

Yes, especially the front air struts. Choose the 4MATIC subcategory if the car has all-wheel drive.
