Air Suspension

How air suspension works

In an air suspension system the car is carried by rubber air springs instead of, or in addition to, steel springs. A compressor pumps air to the springs through a valve block, and height sensors tell the control unit how high the car sits. The system can therefore keep the same ride height regardless of load, and on many cars also lower the car at high speed or raise it on rough roads.

Common faults and symptoms

The rubber in air springs ages and cracks over time, which is the most common cause of problems. Typical signs are a car that sags after standing, a compressor that runs often or for a long time, a warning light, or a car that leans. A leak that is not fixed makes the compressor work too hard and can wear it out as well.

Finding the right part

The easiest way is to search for the OE number on your old part. You can also choose make, model and model year in the menu. Some cars have rear-only air suspension (self-levelling) and others have it on all four corners, so check which system your car has.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace air springs in pairs?

Yes, we recommend replacing both springs on the same axle at the same time. The other spring is just as old and often fails soon after, and a new and an old spring can give different ride heights.

How do I find a leak?

Spray soapy water on the air springs, fittings and lines while the system is pressurised. Where bubbles form, you have found the leak.

Can I replace the air suspension with coil springs?

Yes, for many models there are coil conversion kits that replace the air suspension with coil springs. The car then loses its levelling function. See the Coil Conversion Kits category.
